University of Houston scholars win first place in national government finance competition

UH Mānoa Shidler College of Business Wins National Government Finance Challenge with Citizen-Centric Report

A team of three University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Shidler College of Business students recently won a national government case challenge, earning each member a $1,000 scholarship award. Led by You-Fan Chai, Manying Huang, and Alaina Rhoades, the team analyzed data for the city of Denver, Colorado and developed a “Citizen-Centric Report” to present their findings. The competition provided an opportunity for the students to hone their skills in information gathering and analysis while also pushing them to create visually appealing reports, presentations and videos using tools like Canva and CapCut.

Chai emphasized the importance of participating in competitions like this not only for the prize but for personal development through the learning experience. The Government Finance Case Challenge, hosted by the National Association of Government Accountants (AGA), highlighted the significance of government accountability and transparency as it showcased how data can be transformed into actionable information for citizens. With guidance from UH Mānoa School of Accountancy Professor Jian Zhou and support from Pamela Young from the AGA—Hawaiʻi Chapter, the team excelled in the competition.

The judges, who were government finance experts, evaluated submissions based on their creativity and depth of analysis. The finalists presented their findings in a mock government meeting video that they created themselves. This victory marks UH Mānoa’s third win in four years in either graduate or undergraduate level case competitions, demonstrating the school’s excellence in this field.
