New Jersey Poll: Business Community Optimistic about State’s Potential World Cup Benefits

The Excitement and Optimism Surrounding New Jersey’s 2026 World Cup Hosting – Despite Uncertainty About Personal Profit and Economic Impact

The excitement surrounding the upcoming 2026 World Cup being held in New Jersey remains high, despite the fact that the event is more than two years away. The announcement that the state will host the final match was made just six weeks ago and was a major topic of discussion at the ReNew Jersey Business Summit & Expo in Atlantic City. An unscientific poll conducted during the event showed that nearly two-thirds of respondents viewed this news as the most significant story of 2024, outpacing other options such as the proposed Corporate Transit Fund and the first lady’s effort to earn a U.S. Senate seat.

While hosting such a major sporting event can bring exposure to the state, it does not necessarily guarantee a significant financial gain. However, despite this, many survey respondents expressed optimism about New Jersey benefiting greatly from hosting the World Cup. They emphasized the importance of doing it right to maximize its potential economic impact on their state.

Interestingly, despite this optimism about New Jersey benefiting from hosting the World Cup, many respondents do not believe that their own businesses or organizations will personally profit from it on a personal level. Nearly half of those surveyed indicated that they do not expect their organizations to benefit from it in any way.

Lauren LaRusso, New Jersey’s head of the NY/NJ Host Committee, emphasized her committee’s goal of ensuring that everyone in their state benefits from hosting this global event. She explained that while some may view it as just a few matches taking place in Meadowlands area and New York City region, she highlighted that there are much broader impacts and opportunities involved with hosting an international soccer tournament like this one. This presents a unique opportunity for South Jersey, Central Jersey and other regions of our country to showcase themselves on a global stage, leading to investment and development in areas previously unexplored for mega-sporting events.
