New WHO Regional Director Leads the Charge Against Polio in Eastern Mediterranean Region: 10th Meeting of the Subcommittee on Polio Eradication Holds Promise for a Polio-Free Future

The WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region recently held its 10th meeting of the Regional Subcommittee on Polio Eradication and Outbreaks, with health ministers from the region gathering virtually. This was the first meeting convened by the new WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Hanan Balhky. The Subcommittee’s goal is to strengthen the fight against polio and work towards its eradication.

During the meeting, Dr. Hanan Al-Kuwari, Minister of Public Health in Qatar and Co-chair of the Subcommittee, welcomed Dr. Balhky’s determination to end polio during her tenure. Her Excellency Mr. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Minister of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates, and Co-chair, also expressed their enthusiasm for Dr. Balhky’s vision and expertise in driving regional efforts.
