Mitsubishi Corporation’s Kamsarmax Bulk Carrier Pyxis Ocean Retrofitted with WindWings: Partnership Announced for Autonomous Navigation Systems with Groke Pro

In 2017, Mitsubishi Corporation’s Kamsarmax bulk carrier, Pyxis Ocean, was built and chartered by Cargill. This vessel was the first to be retrofitted with WindWings wind sails, developed by Bar Technologies and Yara Marine Technologies. The sails, at 37.5m tall, were installed on the 80,962dwt vessel at the Cosco yard in China. However, the visibility issue caused by the sails prompted the installation of the Groke Pro situational awareness system from Groke Technologies in Finland on the ship.

After successful voyages monitored by Groke, Bar Technologies and Groke Technologies have announced a partnership to develop autonomous navigation systems for vessels with WindWings. The Groke Pro system provides images to bridge personnel from various locations around the vessel using sensor fusion technology that combines data from sensors, radar, AIS information, and Groke’s cameras. Machine vision and machine learning tools support the crew with accurate information for decision-making, including real-time risk analysis.

John Cooper, CEO of Bar Technologies, sees this partnership as a significant step towards combining low carbon propulsion with the latest automation technologies. He emphasized that overcoming operational challenges requires innovation or partnerships with industry specialists. Juha Rokka, CEO of Groke Technologies, expressed confidence in their technology and expertise to contribute to higher safety standards and a cleaner future in the shipping industry.

The successful collaboration between these two companies will undoubtedly lead to more sustainable and efficient shipping practices in the future. With WindWings wind sails and autonomous navigation systems powered by cutting-edge technologies like machine vision and machine learning tools, ships will be able to operate more efficiently while reducing their environmental impact.

In summary, Mitsubishi Corporation’s Kamsarmax bulk carrier Pyxis Ocean was retrofitted with WindWings wind sails developed by Bar Technologies and Yara Marine Technologies in 2017. To address visibility issues caused by these sails, Groke Pro situational awareness system from Groke Technologies was installed on the ship after successful voyages monitored by Groke.
